OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Jena Nelson, candidate for Oklahoma’s Fifth Congressional District, issued the following statement regarding Stephanie Bice claiming sole credit for the $1.64 million federal grants in Yukon and $1.25 million in Piedmont for water treatment upgrades:

“Yesterday, Stephanie Bice was photographed presenting giant checks to Yukon and Piedmont for water treatment facility upgrades, reminiscent of Ed McMahon delivering Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes checks on television in the 80s (but with none of Ed’s charm).”

“Stephanie actually posted her name in the top left “Account Holder” section of the giant check, indicating that she was personally financing these projects, instead of the truth: both projects are funded by the taxpayers of the United States. They are funded by us, not her. Could she fund at least one of these with her personal funds? Absolutely she could, but she didn’t. The latest financial disclosures reveal her net worth is at least $1.65 million.”

“It’s incredibly disappointing that my opponent feels empowered to claim personal responsibility for public works projects that all Americans are funding. Shame on her. I hope the taxpayers didn’t pay for the cheesy giant checks that she brought to the photo-ops. Apparently, Stephanie’s hosting another fake telephone town hall today, Feb. 19, at 7pm. If someone wanted to ask who paid for the cheesy giant checks, they could call (833) 305-1731 to join the conversation.”

“It’s worth noting that since we launched this campaign last summer, we have had numerous in-person town halls and open forums. In fact, our eighth in-person town hall is next Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 5pm in Oklahoma City’s Belle Isle Library. Stephanie’s last in-person town hall or open forum event was August 26, 2021: 1,638 days ago. That’s more than four years of avoiding her constituents. Why is she scared to face those she was elected to serve?”
